Pope Francis himself arrived in Canada this week with a singular purpose to apologize on Canadian soil directly and personally to indigenous peoples for the Catholic Church's role in the government funded residential school system.
In particular, the trip which the Pope himself has called penance recognizes the damage done to indigenous children who were taken from their families, banned from using their language, forced to abandon their culture and in many cases abused physically, sexually, and emotionally.
"Kneel down the way you made us. Kneel down as little kids and ask for that forgiveness," McIntosh said of the Pope.
At least 150,000 Indigenous children were impacted across the country, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in September 2021, when Canada observed its first national holiday honoring victims and survivors......Continue - CNN
Federal prosecutors have reportedly asked witnesses directly about the actions of the former US president. So far they have chosen not to open a formal criminal investigation into Mr Trump himself over his alleged role.
Rioters stormed the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 in an effort to overturn the president's election defeat. Mr Trump has publicly praised those who attacked the building, but denies any personal wrongdoing.
The Justice Department already has a criminal investigation into what happened on 6 January. The reports that witnesses are being questioned about Mr Trump's role does not mean that federal prosecutors will decide to pursue criminal charges against him.
The investigation is separate to the high-profile, televised Congressional hearings that have taken place over the past few weeks on the same subject - which Mr Trump has characterised as a political witch hunt......Continue - BBC
Deutsche Bank beat market expectations to post an eighth straight quarter of profit on Wednesday, recording a second-quarter net income of 1.046 billion euros ($1.06 billion).
The German lender exceeded consensus expectations among analysts aggregated by Refinitiv of a 960.2 million euro profit, and vastly improved on the 692 million euro profit for the same period last year.
Here are some other highlights for the quarter:
“With the best half-year profits since 2011, we have proven - once again - that we can deliver growth and rising profits in a challenging environment,” Deutsche Bank CEO Christian Sewing said in a statement.
“We are particularly pleased with the progress of our Corporate Bank and Private Bank. Thanks to our successful transformation, we’re well on track to deliver sustainable and well-balanced returns through our four strong core businesses.”
Sewing last month dubbed inflation the “biggest poison” for the global economy, and told CNBC that the risk of recession was rising in Germany and further afield......Continue - CNBC
Russia has decided to quit the International Space Station "after 2024", the newly-appointed chief of Moscow's space agency told President Vladimir Putin yesterday.
Until now space exploration was one of the few areas where cooperation between Russia and the United States and its allies had not been wrecked by tensions over Ukraine and elsewhere.
"Of course, we will fulfil all our obligations to our partners, but the decision to leave this station after 2024 has been made," Yury Borisov, who was appointed Roscosmos chief in mid-July, told Putin.
"I think that by this time we will start putting together a Russian orbital station," Borisov added, calling it the space programme's main "priority"......Continue - thedailystar
China has warned of "serious consequences" if Mrs Pelosi were to proceed with her visit. Second in line to the presidency, Mrs Pelosi would be the highest ranking US politician to travel to the island since 1997.
This rankles China, which sees self-ruled Taiwan as a breakaway province that will eventually be part of the country again. Beijing has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve this.
Even the Biden administration has reportedly tried to dissuade the California Democrat from going. Last week, President Joe Biden told reporters "the military thinks it's not a good idea", but his White House has called Chinese rhetoric against any such trip "clearly unhelpful and not necessary".
The state department says Mrs Pelosi has not announced any travel and the US approach to Taiwan remains unchanged. While the US maintains what is calls a "robust, unofficial relationship" with Taiwan, it has formal diplomatic ties with China, and not Taiwan.
Ms Pelosi's trip, if it were to happen, also comes amid increased tensions between Washington and Beijing - and ahead of a much anticipated phone call between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping......Continue - BBC
